Ball Pass crossing - Mt Cook Range, New Zealand

Start | Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4

Ball Pass is located in the Mount Cook Range in New Zealand's South Island. The hike crosses the range from the Tasman Valley to the Hooker Valley and skirts around Mount Cook, New Zealand's highest peak, at 3754m.

The 4 day trek was guided by Roy from Alpine Recreation and included an introductory climbing course. The first day was the hike up to the privately owned Caroline Hut, followed by two days for the course. The final day we crossed over Ball Pass into the Hooker Valley for the hike back.

The trip was challenging with a back breaking climb on the first day up to the hut. Caroline hut was perched on the edge of the Cook Range looking out over the Tasman Valley on one side and the South East face of Mount Cook on the other.
